How do I know that an examination board expects from a candidate who passes an oral intake? What pleases or annoys the contrary, the highest point? The best way to be able to talk was to become a member of the jury itself: Audrey Steeves, our expert journalist thematic Exams / Competition has therefore thrown into the water!
In early July, the EM Strasbourg invited me to attend an admission board of BCE common competition for the Grande Ecole Programme (EMP). Direction its beautiful campus of brick and glass for half a day of interviews and deliberations.
Beside me, two teachers in finance and strategy, themselves passed through the school benches. Facing us, candidates from prépas, not always comfortable but determined to get them. From this experience, I could take a few tips that I give you.
Prepare before the interview
To avoid further stress, arrive early enough to know your interview room and see where it is. You do not know the campus so to wander a bit before you expect to find your way (if it happens to the jury, it will happen to you!). It’ll then just wait your turn
To wait, return the questionnaire were asked to complete and that the jury will consider during your visit (see box). This allows you to stay focused and put in memory the items you want to address.
The previous candidate leaves the room. You’ll be tempted to debrief with him / her (so they are nice? What they ask as question?), Which can be informative but also destabilizing and especially not necessarily indicative of how it will happen for you. At your own risk so The jury called? Take a deep breath, smile, look straight ahead, go!
What happens during the interview?
You enter the room at the invitation of the jury, placed in front of you. This can be impressive but do not be destabilizing. Remember that if you are there, is that the school felt that you had in the level. He will now have to demonstrate that you have the urge. And remember, the jury is an ally, not an enemy!
The oral lasts 25 minutes. It begins with a brief presentation of each member of the jury, and then based on two parts:
You have a passion, a focus, a project dear to your heart and especially talking to you. You should have brought with you one or more carriers to illustrate the best possible way (photos, articles, music ).
The rest of the interview will consist of a discussion herringbone with the jury, from the passion you have shown, but also the personalized questionnaire that you gave on returning.
25 minutes is long and short at the same time, especially since the jury was not necessarily an eye on the clock. It can leave you more or less time to begin your presentation with questions. It can also exceed 25 minutes (but then a good sign!). All for you is to be tough and stay focused to the end.
Finally, note that maintenance will always end the same way: "Do you have a question for the jury? ". This is the last impression you make to the jury: take the opportunity to show curious!
What are you noticed?
verbal skills, argumentation, behavioral attitude
>> The jury judge your fluency to speak, to defend your point of view, but also to listen and therefore to react to questions and comments. This also goes through your posture, your eyes or your smile, think about it!
Maturity, dynamism, alertness
>> That’s all that emanates from your attitude to reality in general – are you a person who is moving forward, which is not naive? – Especially in the context of the interview – a person who does not let destabilize easily by a jury.
intellectual curiosity, openness to other cultures, adaptability
>> This is an essential criterion for a school which hosts various nationalities and offers a year of studies abroad. The jury will therefore be interested in your international experience (if any) and / or your curiosity for the world around you.
school knowledge, professional project
>> Do you have an idea of the most you would like to take and why? How can the school help you carry out your career plan? What associations do you join?
5. Motivation for the job of manager
Taste for the enterprise, sense of responsibility, ability to project into the future
>> Ah the famous question "where do you see yourself in 10 years? "Well it is so try to think about it! The jury will ask you questions about your knowledge of the world of business or professional sector related to your career, but your commitments in the voluntary framework for example.
The ideal candidate is a best-of of all these criteria. But rest assured: you will not be penalized if you dry on an issue. The key is to know how to bounce, to overcome its difficulties. In the end it is the general impression bonus!
NB: Attention rating criteria may change in form. But basically, this remains true whatever the year and school
questionnaire: how to fill it?
Kind of detailed CV, it prompts you to summarize your education, professional experience you have had, your qualities and faults, your interests, your career plans and ambitions, and finally the issues that are important to you for our era…
This document is not to fill lightly: the jury asked to justify a statement or tell your experiences. Each word can be a pretext for discussion. Weigh each.
What topic to choose and how to talk
A sport or artistic activity you do for years, a trip that marked you, an association in which you are invested, a topic dear to your heart It is not so much the choice of subject is important how you present it. It must reveal who you are, your background, your projects, your worldview.
It is no question of to impress the jury – who will then put you feet on the ground – but rather to show your curiosity, your analytical ability, your critical distance to a subject a priori may seem common.
Example: You decide to talk about windsurfing you practice for several years. After the story of your "exploits", you must be able to explain what you have learned from your experience (perseverance, humility, confidence ). Above all you must have specific knowledge of the subject: number of licensees, the budget of the Federation, the main competitions, names of champions, materials used to manufacture a board, the major manufacturers, names of sponsors, etc. Expect any question, especially if one member of the jury is big fan of windsurfing (it can happen)!
This exercise requires a bit more thorough preparation than 5 minutes on a corner table. In addition you have your hands on this: the more you balls and you can take the jury anywhere. However do not lie or pretend when you do not know: you will always forgive a lack of precision, never a lie (and the jury has the flair for it!).
What pleases or annoys a jury?
It pleases the jury when you are:
Informed about the school (you know the values, currency, programs, options, partnerships, associations ) and the city / region where it is located
This may upset the jury if you are:
Smoothie or naive
Of course, these features may seem like quite caricatured – who can say arrogant or give lessons? – But indicate you especially pitfalls to avoid, and unlike anything that can easily put the jury in a good mood.
